Mom, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, Godparents and Grandparents, the big question:

Did you know your health is your wealth?

Individually, we can choose how to live, what to eat, how much sleep, etc. Actually they are eight factors that determine your health.


At the end of this blog is a free resource that you can download to self-evaluate. I call it the Superhero Health Quiz. That name, Superhero, is a strong indication of how I feel about a healthy body.

In 1999, my Cuban husband died after living with diabetes for 40 years. In 2002, Don's first wife passed from breast cancer which metastasized to her brain. It was not the 6 and 7 years of caregiving though that can be exhausting. What hurt so deeply was watching the person we love the most disappear in front of our eyes.


Don and I decided we will not die from disease. We made health a major layer of our foundation of life (God is the primary layer). Health is one of the first considerations of all the lifestyle decisions we make.

This is 2022 and we needed to look forward. With the physical challenges of life and Don's cancer in 2020-21, we set a goal for returning to climb. Both of us got clearance from our doctors. My cardiologist said "Yes!" to climb high altitude mountains. Don's cancer number had dropped significantly!

Climbing high altitude mountains means we are sleeping at 15,000 feet (4,572.0 meters) in a hut, training for 2 or 3 days and then climbing up to 18,000 feet (5,486.4 meters) , 19,000 feet (5,791.2 meters), depending on the mountain.


We acclimatize by the mountaineering saying: "Climb High, Sleep Low" in order to achieve those altitudes.

You know that Don and I both lost our spouses to disease after 30 and 20 years of marriage. When we married in 2003, we decided to make our health a priority.

Our Priority list is:

  • God

  • Health

  • US

  • Family

What would you list as your top three health goals today?

We called our guide with great excitement! Then we found that Ecuador had COVID restrictions that required quarantining in the hotel for ten nights. When you are living in Quito at 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) you can acclimatize easily from 1,200 feet (365.76 meters), the altitude where we live in southern California. BUT imagine 10 days indoors, not being allowed outside before you can go climb even the mountains above Quito? We would need to add 15 days of travel and 3 or 4 glacier - covered volcanoes. That would create an entire month of semi - climbing mountains. That did not sit well with us.


We needed to re-evaluate our goals. What else can we climb? What country wants tourism to come back to semi-normal? We only had about six weeks until our climbing season. That is life.
